You don’t have to be David Lynch to appreciate a good diner.
Vinyl booths, laminated menus, social media accounts that haven’t been updated since 2013 what’s not to love? The classic greasy spoon speaks to anyone who has ever craved a big plate of eggs, bacon, hash and toast to nurse a hangover, fuel up for a long-haul through the Rockies, or just wanted to hang with some friends in a homey atmosphere.

Although the diner’s mid-20th century heyday has long passed, a few Lower Mainland establishments have weathered food trends, rising rents, and pandemics. Here are one local diner that still know the meaning of a hearty breakfast and a bottomless cup of coffee.

Truck Stop Cafe

When Abby Ty saw that this small, classic neighbourhood diner was for sale, she knew she wanted to continue its legacy. “It’s one of the few diners left in Vancouver, and it’s such an important part of the community,” said Ty, who bought the pink-and-grey Clark Drive landmark with her sister last year. They bring managerial and restaurant experience to the project. “My family has been a huge support they’re actively involved here as well. I always joke that it used to be run by two brothers, and now it’s two sisters,” Ty said. They didn’t want to change the diner’s essence, she says, but they have added a few menu items, including the Truck Stop Egg Benedicts and Chorizo Omelette. “Our team is also working on exciting additions, including waffles and dessert pies, and we’ll be launching a food truck and patio later this year as well.” She adds, “I’m incredibly grateful for the support of the community. Seeing regulars return, meet new faces, and enjoy our food reminds me why keeping the Truck Stop alive was so important.” What to have: the chili and toast ($6.95).
